Constipation is known as irregular bowel movements or problem in the formation or passage of stool. Initially it seems to be harmless but it’s a warning of underlying disorder. Some people use laxatives to get relief from constipation but believe me, this is only a temporary and short term solution and has many side effects. Natural methods to treat and cure constipation are considered to be the best. Lengthy constipation can be followed by intestinal problems. Cancer of the intestinal tract and poor absorption of nutrients can be caused by regular constipation. A diet which lacks in fiber, is the main cause of constipation. Idleness, haemorrhoids or hormonal changes (like those in pregnancy) are other contributory factors.
Psyllium husks (tiny seeds of the plantain) have a fibre called mucilage. Mucilage soaks up a good amount of fluid; the seeds puff up and add volume to the stool. The volume presses on the walls of the colon, inducing the muscles to bond and the stool is passed. It is very important to drink at least eight full glasses of water a day to make the digestive track comfortable. Psyllium also removes toxins from the bowel and reduces acidity. It increases urine flow as well.
Instead of psyllium husks, flax (also known as Linseed) can be used which is rich in fiber and fatty acids. Drink at least 150 ml of water (per desert spoon of seeds) for the seeds to work.
Senna (a food and dietary supplement) is a useful remedy for constipation. It contains anthraquinone (a powerful natural laxative) which is when combined with ginger or cloves can improve taste and avoid griping pains. Do not use anthraquinone laxatives for long periods of time as they have side effects. Aloe Vera is also known as a good herb for getting relief from constipation.
Rhubarb is quite high in fiber and it contains a natural laxative chemical. Its laxative action is fairly powerful. Liquorice is another herb for constipation relief but it can be a laxative in large doses. Olive oil can lower blood cholesterol levels and has a mild laxative. It is important to keep in mind that laxatives should never be abused. Long and regular use can make you dependent on them. Try to avoid harsh artificial laxatives and prefer natural one.
Take a diet which is full of fiber rich vegetables and fruit. Include a combination of almonds, dried apricots, avocados, chicory, dates, figs, grapes, pineapple, mangoes, rhubarb, soybeans, olive, prunes walnuts, turnips and coconut to your food as these are recognised as natural laxatives. Avoid dairy products and processed food.
Water is necessary for many bodily functions including disposal of waste, digestion etc. Lack of water is a large contributing factor to constipation. Avoid tea, coffee or soft drink because they have minor diuretic effect and they remove more fluids from body rather than adding. Drink water and if necessary, add some lemon or fresh fruit juice for flavour. Juices are also good for constipation relief. Any organic juice is good but prune juice is considered to be best as a laxative.
