Depression is termed as a psychological illness which is majorly caused by imbalance of chemicals in brain. There are other contributing factors as well like failure to achieve the goals, break up, broken relations, overwork etc. As it is a disease, it has a cure also. Different antidepressants can be used to treat various kinds of depression. The best way is to go to a doctor and discuss your mental condition. He can then diagnose the type of depression and start the medications accordingly.
Licorice – It is a very powerful antidepressant. It increases the presence of serotonin in the brain. Licorice and its extracts are considered to be reliable for normal use in reasonable amounts. However, it has some side effects like headache, high blood pressure and excessive loss of potassium.
St.-John's-wort - The extract of this herb contains at least ten pharmacologically active constituents. It is a mood elevator and tranquillizer. It is effective in relieving mood swing and sadness. It improves sleep quality as well. It doesn’t damage your concentration or attention. It is found to be more effective than other pharmaceutical drugs. Recommended dosage is 300mg with meals thrice a day. There is a possibility of mild stomach irritation with long term use. Pregnant ladies should avoid St.-John's-wort. This herb makes the skin more sensitive to sun. So avoid excessive exposure to sun, if you are taking this herb regularly.
Ginkgo - This is most useful when the patient is elder and suffer from lower blood circulation towards the brain. It helps increased cerebral circulation and improvement in memory. It is best to take gingko along with other herbs. Its best to take 80 to 120 mg twice daily. The overdose may result in irritability, restlessness and diarrhea.
Siberian Ginseng – It helps getting the neurotransmitters balance better which consist of serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and epinephrine in the mind. It should be taken in the quantity of 400 mg of extract thrice in a day. It operate as MAO inhibitor and help improve the patient the well being sense. Caraway, coriander celery, fennel, nutmeg and dill are other herbs that have MAO inhibitor.
Balm – Also termed as Melissa, this is used in the form of of leaves and tops at the time they are green and fresh and not dried. It motivates the brain and help coming out of the lethargic an apathetic feeling.
Basil - Fresh basil leaves are added to salads which further help to get rid of depression.
Black Hellebore – It is termed as Christmas rose and it is suggested in small quantity.
Borage – It is having good amount of potassium and is a very efficient antidepressant. The “blue” feeling can be reduced by the juice from borage blossoms and leaves which have a effect on the glandular system. To reduce sadness, melancholy and pensiveness can be reduced by using the combination of seeds and leaves. The fresh leaves can be used as a salad.
Clove – it is used in conjunction with other things. Add 1 part of mint, 2 parts of rose petals and ¼ part of cloves in crushed form. Boil all these in water and take the inhale effect of the steam. This is to get rid of gloominess and is helpful in getting good sleep.
