Vaginal discharge is the results of various secretions those are produced from tiny glands in the lining of the vagina and cervix of the uterus. Almost all the women will have a little discharge starting a year or two before her puberty and ending after the menopause. Vaginal discharge is most common problem that is faced by a woman in her life one or more time.

The amounts of the discharge vary from woman to woman and therefore, it is quite difficult to know the exact amount of vaginal discharge. But if a woman need to change her pad or innerwear frequently and she constantly feels wetness in and around the vagina all the time, it is considered as vaginal discharge indicating that something is wrong in the body.

A normal, physiological vaginal discharge is generally clear, creamy or little light yellow in color. This vaginal discharge with very little quantity not making the innerwear wet can be considered as a normal one and a woman can wait for some days that it may go automatically. Change in that color and increased quantity may suggest some diseased condition and requires medical attention.

If there is a significant amount of vagina discharge, it is to be tested in laboratory and therapeutic cause is evaluated before starting the actual treatment for vaginal discharge. The test is performed after taking the sample of the discharge and then the swab is examined under the microscope to detect any microorganism.

The most common cause for vaginal discharge is vaginitis i.e. infection of the vagina caused by bacteria, fungal infection or any other microorganism. Sexually transmitted disease also cause discharge from the vagina. Many times the urinary tract infection may get transferred to genital tract and may cause vaginal discharge.

There are various types of vaginal discharge such as white discharge (mostly leucorrhea), brown discharge, yellow discharge, bloody discharge and sometimes bile colored or greenish discharge. Dark brown or red colored discharge may indicate old hemorrhagic condition that needs immediate medical assistance. The vaginal discharge may or may not have foul smell. The fungal infection in vagina may cause the vaginal discharge and the condition is generally accompanied with itching in the vagina with lot of irritation.

Sometimes it is not accurate to agree for having sexual activity during the vaginal discharge. But it is often seen that during the various vaginal discharge, woman loses her interest in participating in sexual activities with her partner. She may feel awkward and dull and therefore, tries to avoid sex.

The treatment for the vaginal discharge depends upon its cause. Normal discharge just requires waiting and it will go. Infected vagina requires treatment with various antibiotics. Bleeding from vagina may require further investigation and treatment. Whatever the cause is, the vaginal discharge must be taken seriously and in all condition, the personal hygiene is most important factor. The vagina is to be cleaned with antiseptic lotion and the innerwear is to be changed frequently.
