Shunthi is dried form of adrak (ginger) and is known by the botanical name of zingiber officinale and zingeberacea family. Shunthi is a kind of herb which acts as a rejuvenator for the body also known by the name of vishvabhaishajya that means medicine of the whole world.Shunthi is the dried form of the thick tuberous rhizome of creeping perennial plant 15 to 30 cm in length. Shunthi contains 1-4 % of volatile oils which gives Shunthi a characteristic smell and taste. These ingredients include zingiberene and bisaboline which gives Shunthi a particular smell and the pungent taste is provided by gingerols and shogaols.

Marich is black pepper and is known by the botanical name of piper nigrum and piperacea family.Marich is the fruit of the plant, also known as peppercorn. When it is in dried form it is a small drupe which is five millimeters in diameter. It is dark red when is in fully matured condition and contains a single seed. It mainly contains piperine which is present both in fruit and the seed. Other than this it also contains terpenes as pinene, limonene, caryophyllene etc.
Pipali is Indian long pepper and is known by the botanical name of piper longum and piperacea family. Pipali has immuno-modulating properties and works well on the respiratory and digestive systems. Pipali is the fruit of the plant about the size of a poppy seed. The fruit contains piperine which is an alkaloid and is responsible to give pungent taste to it. Pipali works as a very good stimulant for both the digestive as well as respiratory systems. It gives strength to reproductive system as well, giving energy to the reproductive system and works as aphrodisiac.
These three herbs are also commonly used as kitchen spices which when taken together constitutes Trikatu.
Trikatu supports the digestive system and improves its functioning. It cures conditions like dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion, belching, nausea, constipation flatulence etc. it works as a very good carminative and improves the gastric function.
